Edmonton first city in Canada to buy its own mini weather radar station

17-02-2016 11:22 - News Generiche
On September 24, 2015, the City of Edmonton became the first municipality in Canada and perhaps in North America to acquire its own mini-weather radar for storm water management. It will help better predict flash floods, like those that hit Mill Woods and southwest Edmonton a few years ago.
The X-Band system named WR-10X, manufactured by the Italian Company ELDES srl based in Florence, was supplied and installed by RadHyPS Inc. and is remotely operated for the city under a multi-year agreement.
The high spatial and temporal resolution data will help the city to further its urban water resources research and development. A key objective of the system is to provide the city with improved gauge-adjusted radar rainfall data for utmost rainfall storm characterization.
It wont let them predict the storms. But will let them predict how different types of storms will affect the capacity of underground pipes underground. The radar data will feed into a computer model that will predict effects and immediately send instructions to the main control room. That will allow operators to remotely adjust the pump stations, drain storage tanks or engage diversion chambers to better prepare for the onslaught.
