E-PSS Poseidon Avionic Version | POD mounted HWIL Programmable Seeker Simulator for ESM/ECM Assessment against Anti-Ship Missiles

The development of the E-PSS Poseidon in the Avionic version stems from an ELDES in-depth study on the operational requirements generated by a well-known military problem, the Anti-Ship Missiles Threats.

As is known, a warship has a large Radar Cross Section and radar-guided AShM are able to exploit it, also their flight profiles make their early detection very difficult.

For this reason, warships need an effective protection against these threats and these protection methods must be tested.

ELDES technology has innovated the assessment methods of the so-called Soft Kills (ECM), designed to avoid the acquisition of the target by the missile or to deceive it when the target has been already acquired, developing programmable threat emulators in a “closed-loop” approach (real scenario and real RF), to be used in the most realistic and reality-oriented test environment, the field testing.

The ELDES solution, represented by the E-PSS Poseidon, is based on the use of a programmable seeker emulator to represent the general threat behaviour, and for transmit, receive, and emulate logic behaviours. The E-PSS Poseidon Ground Version was designed as a shore-base installation in which its threat emulator antenna detects and engages warships at real distance in an operational scenario.

This approach allows to emulate the Seeker with high accuracy, within a real scenario, with real targets, and with real ECMs installed on the platforms to be protected.

The Avionic version of the E-PSS Poseidon introduces a different and innovative level of simulation, making it dynamic and maintaining the advantages of re-using existing technology, including, mainly, the availability of the Software Defined Radar (SDR) programming environment.

With this innovative approach the threat emulator is installed in a POD mounted on an airborne platform that mimic the AShM flight profile. Dynamism can provide additional information for a full assessment of the ASMD, operating in a scenario that will reproduce a very realistic J/S ratio during all the trial.

The effects of the ECMs can be viewed in real-time (and recorded) from a display that would be available both to the aircraft and ship’s operators. After trial, data can be replayed or analysed with special analysis software and estimate, through appropriate metrics, the actual level of the warship’s ECM protection.
