Beyond Forecasting: Weather Radar as Hydrology Research Infrastructure

Not just “what’s the weather,” but “what happens to the water.”

The University of Cagliari‘s Hydrology Group acquired a weather radar to answer exactly that: supporting advanced research in hydrology and operational meteorology, not just running a forecasting desk.

As Alessandro Seoni, Research Technician in Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering at Università di Cagliari, told us, their WR-25XP radar supports:

→ Nowcasting: merging local radar observations with national mosaic data and in-house numerical weather models for short-term precipitation forecasting

→ Rainfall downscaling: sharpening spatial and temporal resolution to support high-resolution hydrological studies

→ Validation: cross-checking radar measurements against the regional rain gauge network and the university’s own monitoring system

→ Real-time observation: continuous monitoring of atmospheric phenomena as they evolve

→ Post-event analysis: studying intense weather events after the fact to understand atmospheric processes and their hydrological impact on the territory

This is precipitation data doing double duty: meteorological monitoring and hydrological research, from the same instrument.
